With summertime here, many StartLine Racing runners will escape to destinations around the globe for vacation. If you are one of them, make sure to pack your running gear and get a little lost exploring some new routes while getting in those miles. A training run in a new and different location can be all you need to reignite your passion for running. Sometimes you have to let go of your high expectations and enjoy the new scenery (duh), time away from the normal routine (yes, please) and just run. Here are some tips to make sure you enjoy your those miles and make the most of your vacation.

    1. Prep For the New Location – Traveling somewhere with a higher altitude? More humidity? Sandy beach instead of pavement? Make sure you consider all of these things when planning out your vacay runs. You don’t want to end up injured or ill on your getaway, so prepare accordingly. Hydrate enough and make sure you have the right gear for the climate.

    2. Don’t Have to Go All Out – Remember that your vacation is exactly that, a vacation, a break from routine. So make sure you treat it and your runs like that. This doesn’t have to be the time to push yourself or your mileage but instead make it a chance to reconnect to your love of running and reward your body for all it’s hard work.

    1. Map it Out – If you aren’t familiar with your vacation spot, check out a few mapping websites and apps like MapMyRun to see where the locals run near you. If you are staying at a hotel, many of them can provide you with a map of pre-planned running routes around the property. Feeling social? Look up some local running groups and see if they have any scheduled group runs for the dates that you will be in town.

  1. Find a Race – Some of the best motivation to get in your miles can be a local race in your vacation spot. If your travel companions don’t mind and you find a convenient race, sign-up. Not only can you sightsee, but you could score some fun new swag. And admit it, lots of us run for BLING!! Not local to Az, but heading this way for the summer? Check out StartLine Racing Sunrise Series for a list of locations and dates for our remaining races.

The bottom line, it’s freaking VACATION! Run if you want. Listen to your body and mind. If you need a break, take it. If the new surroundings motivate you, then lace up the shoes and hit the vacation pavement. You won’t be sorry either way and you never know, you could discover a few hidden sights or make some new running friends along the way.
